Shanghai: A WWII Sanctuary
By WWII’s outbreak, Shanghai sheltered more Jewish refugees than anywhere else in the world. This program explores Jewish life in Shanghai from the mid-1800s through WWII, focusing on the 24,000 refugees who survived the war there. It features firsthand survivor accounts and highlights unsung heroes like Chinese diplomat Dr. Ho Feng-Shan, Japanese diplomat Chiune Sugihara, American social worker Laura Margolis, and villainous Nazi Josef Meisinger.
